Verifying external OAuth2/OIDC JSON Web Tokens at the API Gateway edge rejects unauthenticated traffic before it consumes compute or database connections inside your private VPC. However, one of the most dangerous vulnerabilities in microservice architectures occurs when downstream services blindly trust headers like X-Authenticated-User-Id or X-Tenant-Id without stripping spoofed client headers at the ingress proxy or verifying an internal gateway signature. As a cloud engineer and backend engineer, here is how I implement defense-in-depth edge JWT verification.

1. Stripping Spoofable Identity Headers at the Ingress Edge

If a downstream service reads r.Header.Get("X-User-Id") and an API route is accidentally configured without a gateway authorizer, an external caller can pass X-User-Id: admin directly. The edge middleware must unconditionally strip all internal X-Internal-* headers before evaluating the JWT, then inject a short-lived HMAC-signed internal context header:

// gateway/auth_middleware.go
package gateway

import (
	"crypto/hmac"
	"crypto/sha256"
	"encoding/hex"
	"fmt"
	"net/http"
	"strings"
)

func EdgeJWTAndHeaderSanitizer(next http.Handler, verifyJWT func(string) (userID, tenantID string, err error), internalSecret []byte) http.Handler {
	return http.HandlerFunc(func(w http.ResponseWriter, r *http.Request) {
		// 1. Strip any client-supplied internal headers to prevent header spoofing
		for h := range r.Header {
			if strings.HasPrefix(strings.ToLower(h), "x-internal-") {
				r.Header.Del(h)
			}
		}

		// 2. Extract and verify Bearer JWT against cached JWKS
		authz := r.Header.Get("Authorization")
		if !strings.HasPrefix(authz, "Bearer ") {
			http.Error(w, "missing bearer token", http.StatusUnauthorized)
			return
		}
		userID, tenantID, err := verifyJWT(strings.TrimPrefix(authz, "Bearer "))
		if err != nil {
			http.Error(w, "invalid or expired token", http.StatusUnauthorized)
			return
		}

		// 3. Inject authenticated identity + internal HMAC proof for upstream services
		r.Header.Set("X-Internal-User-Id", userID)
		r.Header.Set("X-Internal-Tenant-Id", tenantID)
		mac := hmac.New(sha256.New, internalSecret)
		mac.Write([]byte(fmt.Sprintf("%s:%s", userID, tenantID)))
		r.Header.Set("X-Internal-Identity-Sig", hex.EncodeToString(mac.Sum(nil)))

		next.ServeHTTP(w, r)
	})
}

2. JWKS Key Rotation & Singleflight Cache Refresh

When an identity provider rotates its signing keys and presents a new kid (Key ID) in the JWT header, use Go's singleflight.Group with a minimum 60-second cooldown to refresh the JWKS endpoint—preventing an attacker from triggering a JWKS outbound HTTP DDoS by sending random kid strings.
